Young People’s Concerts

The LSO has been introducing orchestral music to young listeners for over 50 years. On February 18, 2009, fourth through sixth graders will fill the Wharton Center’s Great Hall and learn about the instruments of the orchestra through a narrated concert. This year we are collaborating with BoarsHead Theater and The Greater Lansing Ballet Company in a presentation of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf . Admission is FREE! Performances are at 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. and will run approximately 40 minutes.

Young Composers Competition

Young composers between the ages of 9 and 18 are invited to submit their original, orchestral compositions to the LSO for the third annual Young People’s Composition Contest. The winning piece is performed by the LSO at one of the Young People’s Concerts.

Partnership Programs

Our partnership programs involve at least a year-long commitment made between a school or organization and the LSO to bring music programming to young students. We offer musical activities and performances that have the potential to reach hundreds of students throughout the year. Benefits also include free or discounted concert tickets for students and their families, faculty, and staff.

Music in Our Schools

The Music In Our Schools program brings LSO musicians, both solo performers and ensembles, into classrooms. Students are given opportunities to experience live music in their own setting, interact with professional musicians, and learn about instruments, music making, and composers.
