LSO Welcomes Courtney Millbrook
as New Executive Director

The Board of Directors, staff and musicians of the Lansing Symphony Orchestra are proud to welcome Courtney Millbrook as our new Executive Director. Many of you may know Courtney from her position as Assistant Director of Development at the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts. Courtney was chosen out of a field of many qualified applicants for her expertise in fundraising and management of non-profit organizations. Her past work experience includes positions with the Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park and the American Cancer Society.

Courtney's first day with the LSO is Monday, October 19th, but we had a chance to talk with her about her thoughts on the new position:

You’ve worked for the Frederick Meijer Gardens, the Wharton Center and now the LSO. What do you enjoy most about working in the arts?

There is so much to enjoy about working in the arts! I have really come to value the variety of activities that can be experienced from exhibitions to performances and the quality of the people who work in this field and their passion for what they do. It seems no matter what the art form, the experience of sharing it with others creates a wonderful community atmosphere. Most of all, I enjoy the opportunity to learn new things and gain new perspectives. Sometimes that learning comes from an "expert" in the field, other times it is from someone who is experiencing a work of art for the first time.

A large part of your position with the Symphony is fundraising and development. Why is support of the arts crucial in economic times like these?
-

Supporting the arts is about supporting our community. Without vibrant and relevant art offerings, we lose an important part of who we are. We would lose the opportunity to have a shared common experience of going to a performance and having artists share their gifts. The arts are an essential ingredient for any region that wants to be successful with economic growth. Supporting the arts is about supporting creativity, innovation and collaboration - all things that will sustain us in difficult economic times and eventually lead us out of them to a brighter and more prosperous future.

You're Invited to Meet Courtney!

Join us Thursday, October 29th from 4:00-6:00pm for a meet-and-greet with Courtney and the LSO staff. Visit us in our downtown Lansing offices on the fourth floor of the NuUnion Credit Union building (click for a map). Light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!
